The Many-Faceted Life of Lavender: Seasonal Allergies

A few Springs ago we made a trip to South Georgia to visit family. Now, being a resident of the Memphis, Tennessee area I am well acquainted with seasonal allergies; but nothing had prepared me for the sneezing, itchy eyes, and total discomfort of the allergy season I encountered there. Nothing at all! As a reflexologist , I know the value of reflexology for helping to relieve allergy symptoms. Alas, I did not have one available to me. Young Living Essentials Oils, however, are also a big part of my life. Of course, I had a goody bag full of these with me. I had heard others say that lavender on the back of the neck just above the hairline often often provided them great relief. Guess what? I tried it! It worked!! And I used it ALOT!!! Lavender is often nicknamed the "Swiss Army Knife" of essential oils, because of its many-faceted benefits. I had often used a drop or two on my pillow as a sleep aid. I knew its potential effectiveness for helping to heal burns and skin irr

THE MOON

I would like to share an inspirational story dedicated to my dearest mom who passed away on the 27th January, 2013. My mom was a firm believer in the energies of the full moon and used to do a full moon meditation each month.  The time of her passing was one could say by co-incidence, but I believe planned by her.  She passed at the full moon as it was shining brightly in the sky.  On Thursday the 25th April would have been her 80th birthday and it also happened to be full moon! We gathered as a family at the cliff paths in our gorgeous little town to lay her ashes, her favourite place to walk.  The moon was so full and shining so brightly over the sea and there wasn't a breath of wind.  We wrote on floating lanterns and set them off into the sky.  Ending with the OM sound and saying her favourite prayer - The Great Invocation.  Truly the most incredible ceremony, which left me feeling on a high for a while. What a wonderful reminder each month of my beautiful mom. Hamba kakuhle ma

What's Growing in Your Herb Garden?

April 15th -- a well marked day on most all calendars at least here in The U.S. Tax Day! In the Memphis, TN area it marks an important day for gardeners as well. It is usually considered the safe date for the last frost to be past. Veggies, flowers, and herbs may be safely planted. New growth belongs to Footsteps In Eden Reflexology's Spring renewal focus in the month of April. My thoughts have turned to an herb garden in a small prepared bed in my backyard. I'm eager to begin and even spent a little time this weekend to clean out some of it and discover a few new sprouts from last year's endeavors. I've also spent a little time investigating cultivation of herbs and have found a couple articles to share with my readers. The first gives some basic information for planting herbs. It is found at  The Tasteful Garden . The second -- and this one may be quite helpful to many of us -- discusses 10 things not to do with an herb garden. I'm perfectly willing to learn from

Water with Lemon -- Are there Benefits?

Footsteps in Eden Reflexology is spending the month of April focusing on cleansing. Some aspect of this topic will show up each week this month as we prepare our weekly email communication with our clients. A recent challenge faced by a family member has me looking at the various cleansing options of which I am aware. Water with lemon is a common one, and one I believe may have some definite benefits for improving digestion and encouraging bodies toward a more alkaline state. Rather than rehash it all here, I'm suggesting this link: Energize Alkaline Diet Blog . This blog writer has covered the subject thoroughly. Venture over there and learn much about alkalinizing the body, which may result in increased health and wellness. High pH water is suggested. Last summer I discovered the BioCerra water system and invested in a filtering pitcher that enhances water with electrolytes and increased alkalinity. I have no vested interest in this product except to say that my family and client

Front Yard Gardening... What We're Planning this Summer

(Photo from Front Yard Farmer website.) Front yard gardening has created quite a buzz and a stir in recent years. Some neighborhoods and communities have tried to stop homeowners from cultivating well maintained vegetable plants and berry bushes in their front yards (and sometimes the back yard, too) while nearby grass yards sometimes left to go to weeds and neglect, were considered quite acceptable. Seems rather a silly argument in the day when we are all looking for healthier options for our families. "Tennessee Home & Farm" (a publication for members of the TN Farm Bureau)  Spring 2013 issue featured front yard garden ideas. You too may visit the featured farmer's website/business . This really captured my attention. I believe you will be seeing a bit of this incorporated in our yard this year. While my herbs thrived quite well in the partial shade of our backyard, veggies didn't fare so well.  We were offered the option of a stake in a community garden, bu

Systematically Helping the Body Heal Itself through Reflexology

Foot Reflexology Tennent Technique™ addresses all the systems of the body by employing a unique sequence of pressure applications to the hand and foot reflexology pressure points. The sequence of a reflexology treatment by JoAnn is designed to follow the natural pathways that the body utilizes when flushing toxins in order to heal naturally. JoAnn’s Technique of Foot Reflexology begins with the reflex pressure points that refer directly to the spine—the taproot—where nerves connect to, muscle, organ and gland. Then systematic pressure is applied to the reflexology pressure points that correspond to the anatomy in the head—moving and clearing energy channels through the sense organs in the specific direction that they drain. The reflexology treatment proceeds to the endocrine system, using gravity, with the intent of draining for the purposes of detoxification. Attention is then given to the reflexology pressure points of the reproductive system. Foot Reflexolog

Green Facts -- Celebrating St. Patrick

This month of March at Footsteps in Eden Reflexology we have our focus on green -- green living, green celebrating, green facts, just plain green! It just seems appropriate for the month that celebrates St. Patrick. This blog post will share a few of the fun facts we've discovered about St. Patty, the Irish, and Clover. Our sole purpose for you to just ENJOY!! So as we celebrate green, the first interesting fact we're choosing to share: The actual color of St. Patrick is BLUE . GREEN became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow. (Sounds a bit -- or maybe even a whole lot superstitious to me -- but a fun fact none-the-less.) In Chicago the Chicago River is dyed green for St. Patrick's Day (with green vegetable dye). Lucky Charms, a favorite cereal brand among many, young and old, was created in 1963, with its popular mascot, Lucky the Lepr

Reflexology ‘Takes a Stand’ on Foot Care

Foot reflexology is a natural way to care for your feet, as well as your whole body. If you are experiencing symptoms such as foot pain, numbness, swelling, bunions, fungus etc. it is best to treat the entire system, along with the feet, with reflexology. Someone experiencing foot pain may look at a foot reflexology chart to locate the specific foot pressure points (or the acupressure points) that relate certain conditions. Receiving a foot reflexology session may confirm and provide additional information based on the relative sensation of the pressure points. A Certified Reflexologist may also offer instruction for self-treatment. Regular application of pressure on the reflex-zones and pressure points of the hands and feet could become part of a natural foot care regime. Regular foot reflexology treatments assist with health maintenance as well as when there is illness, imbalance or foot pain. Numbness (neuropathy), foot pain, foot swelling or foot fung

The 'Nurture Special'

A few months ago one of my regular massage clients arrived and said she would like to try reflexology but she wasn't sure because she loved her massage so much. After a little think I suggested that we do a bit of both. She was thrilled and so off we went. I adapted the treatment to what she needed at the time and she left a very happy customer. Next time she came back she simply said, 'Can I have the Nurture Special please' and so that's what I've decided to call it! It's not just limited to massage and reflexology however. It can be a combination of any two treatments.  So what combination does your heart desire? Get your wish list fulfilled with a mix of therapies in a 90 minute 'Nurture Special'! You choose! How does reflexlogy work?

The systematic application of pressure to the reflexology points stimulates the body’s ability to rejuvenate and heal itself. Hand and Foot Reflexology treatments open the subtle electrical channels that become blocked due to emotional and physical imbalances. Foot pain, foot tenderness or foot numbness indicates what system of the body may have become imbalanced. Reflexology addresses these imbalances and brings the root of the imbalance into awareness. Creating a physiological change in the body improving circulation and thereby reducing stress, reflexology aids in the elimination of body waste and restores body function to improve health. Working on a cellular level to rebalance the body, nourish the cells with nutrients, alter the cellular memory of emotions, and change the electrical vibration in a way that allows the body to process food efficiently and detoxify naturally. Reflexology is safe for expectant mothers with caution to avoid the direct pressure
